Panel Lights

Panel lights are becoming a prominent lighting source in all domestic and office environments and with the increased usage and acceptance, their performance has improved and technology has also evolved to give better performance and higher illuminations for the same input wattage.

The improvements have happened in the field of

·         LED Technology itself whereby a LED is producing higher light per watt

·         Heat dissipation by better design of heat sinks and material selection

·         Placing of LED either on the edge or at the back

The change in technology for slim panels to be designed to place the LED on the back rather than edge of the slim panels is a recent development.

Back Lit Technology and its advantages:

Use of back lit technology has been in vogue even earlier on in the Down lights but then suffered a lot due to their thickness and the bigger size of the heat sink. Now with the better technology, material and better designs, the heat dissipation has improved. Also better diffuses have made the back lit panels thinner and efficient.

The back lit panels have the distinct advantage of better illumination as the light source is direct and there is no loss of illumination due to refractive losses and the inefficient mounting

Some of lights may still have a higher thickness as compared to edge lit slim panels but that may not be a disadvantage as there will normally be sufficient space available for mounting the panels in the false ceiling.

The backlit panels may also be easier to service from the point of view of the service to be provided post sales as it may involve a change of just the PCB and the light could be made functional.

Design Considerations:

Since the light source is at the back of the light the heat dissipation becomes critical thereby the heat sink and the PCB designs are very important.

The material of the PCB becomes quite important as the heat generated should not let the junction temperature go beyond the acceptable limits thereby killing the LED.

Conclusion:

Bothe Edge Lit and Back Lit technologies have their own set of advantages and no one can be so very emphatic in concluding one over the other. It is the need of the customer and the application that will probably be the deciding factor.
